Writing or presenting a good argument is a critical life skill! In school, argument is part of the new Common Core State Standards and will be included in requirements for graduation. In career and life, presenting your opinions with solid evidence and reasoning is part of being a valued employee, trusted friend, or contributing citizen. In order to help students understand the structure of strong argument writing, we use crime puzzles to teach claims, evidence, warrants, extended backing, and counterclaim. It's an engaging way to prepare for writing about the debatable ideas of literature, social studies, or even science!
