Independent Reading for English 9
One of the best ways to build vocabulary, become a better writer, and overall do better in school is to read, as in a lot. Much of our homework in English 9 is to read student-selected books. When finished, students will complete a variety of projects to demonstrate understanding of the novel's basic plot and reading purposes (complex character, theme, etc.)
Pablo Picasso painted very abstract portraits of people, often trying to show multiple sides of a person at once on a flat surface. This project takes his portraits as inspiration for analyzing how a character in a novel is complex--has many "sides" or motivations. See the You Tube videos for ideas on how you might create your own simple Picasso portrait for a character in your book.
Index Card Reviews
For some independent Reading Projects, we'll make Index Review Cards. See below for some pretty good examples of what students have done in the past.
